Montelukast prevents wheezing, difficulty breathing, chest tightness, and coughing caused by asthma in adults and children 12 months and older. Adults and children 6 years and older use Montelukast to prevent bronchospasm (breathing difficulties) during exercise. Adults and children 2 years and older use Montelukast to treat the symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis (sneezing and a stuffy, runny, or itchy nose) and perennial allergic rhinitis. Use Montelukast to treat seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis only when other medications are not effective. Montelukast belongs to a class of medications called leukotriene receptor antagonists (LTRAs) and works by blocking substances in the body that cause asthma and allergic rhinitis symptoms.
